Lewis / Fort Gordon Survivor Outreach Services The Gold Star Wives of America was formed before the end of World War II to provide support for the spouses and children of those who lost their lives while serving in the Armed Forces of the United States.

April 5 will mark the 69th anniversary of the first meeting of the Gold Star Wives of America. This organization formed when four young widows met in an apartment on West 20th Street in New York City on April 5, 1945. As time continued, Gold Star Wives groups were organized in other cities throughout the country, and were chartered as chapters of the Gold Star Wives of America, Inc. (www.goldstarwives.org)

The organization now has over 10,000 members and local chapters in all parts of the United States. The group holds a congressional charter under Title 36 of the United States Code under Public Law 96-497. From the beginning, Gold Star Wives of America has organized and sponsored numerous events and activities for the children of the fallen, and guided them as they formed their own auxiliary of the organization called the Gold Star Sons and Daughters.

This Year the Fort Gordon Survivor Outreach Services team will celebrate Gold Star Wives Day April 5 by hosting a Gold Star Wives Day Family Picnic at Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary in Locust Grove, Ga. (www.Noahs- Ark.org). The animal sanctuary is dedicated to bringing children and animals together with the purpose of providing unconditional love, unconditional service and a future full of hope.

The day will include an opportunity for Gold Star Families to meet and develop new friendships with other Gold Star Families. SOS invites all Gold Star Wives and family members to come out and enjoy this special day as we celebrate and honor those who have loved and supported our Armed Forces service members who gave their lives in the service of our country.
