Photo by Siobhan Carlile / 7th Signal Command (T) Public Affairs The 2013 Turkey Bowl was an epic clash of the titans as the 7th Signal Command’s Officers managed to hold on and defeat the NCOs 7-6. On a picture perfect morning for football, the two teams entered a neatly dressed orange and blue field of battle.

The game began, as the NCOs won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. The Officers initial drive was shaky, resulting in a gain of only ten yards and a punt by yours truly. The NCOs struggled against the Officers’ stout defense in a drive that ended with an interception by deep safety Jermaine Sutton.

Now on offense the Officers developed a little rhythm as Sutton, also the quarterback on offense, broke free for a long run and later completed a deep pass to wide receiver Rob Johnson for a touchdown. The Officers added an extra point, with a pass to Odene Brathwaite, establishing a 7-0 lead midway through the first half. The NCO quarterback, Danny Hurst, picked up a little steam with a short pass to Javante Staten followed by an effective run for a NCO first down, but the Officers defense held and ended the drive with an interception by Derrick Richardson. The Officers took a 7-0 lead into the half.

The NCOs started the second half with the ball and established a respectable drive with spread offense. They made effective use of two quarterbacks Terence Woodliff and Alex Hirschfeld. But, the Officers defense once again proved solid in end zone stand forcing a turnover on downs. The Officer offense dinked and dunked their way down the field with a series of short passes to center, Patrick Lee and wide out Steven Middleton. The NCOs managed to mount a tremendous end zone stand, forcing a turnover on downs as Joseph Burrage made the stop for the NCOs on the three yard line.

Now on offense the NCOs once again spread the field for potentially their last drive, with 2:50 on the clock. The NCOs had success moving the ball with combination of runs and passes to tight end Darryl Montgomery. They finished the drive with a touchdown pass from Woodliff to Staten, who extended himself to fall in the end zone as time expired. Now with the score Officers-7, NCOs-6, The NCOs lined up for a two point attempt and the victory. They spread the field and ran a series of crossing routes, but the Officers defense held as Johnson deflected the pass across middle to seal the victory for the Officers in the 2013 Turkey Bowl.
