Closed roads, routes, keep runners safe

Courtesy graphic A recent message sent out to all Fort Gordon personnel was a reminder of the designated running routes for morning physical training. According to Master Sgt. Justin Hroblak, noncommissioned officer in charge of Fort Gordon’s Directorate for Plans, Training, Mobilization, and Security, following these routes is crucial to maintaining safety for runners as well as vehicle commuters.

“Service members have been deviating from the established routes, and that’s dangerous,” he said. “ With the recent time change affecting the hours of darkness, it’s a huge safety factor when Soldiers are running in areas of low visibility and high traffic.”

Hroblack also said that there are numerous trails on the installation that can be used for running.

“There are also multiple paths next to roadways that can also be used for runs, such as the path along side Chamberlain Ave. from the MIA/POW memorial to the Gate 1 Express Shoppette,” he said. “Trails and paths that have no vehicle traffic can be utilized for running with no prior coordination necessary.”

Additionally, other areas and routes for physical training can be arranged with proper prior coordination with the Installation Operations Center or Range Control. Requests must be submitted 72 hours in advance. This is so any conflicts or necessary traffic advisories can be posted.

Soldiers not only need to remember where they are authorized to exercise, however, they must also be sure they have on the necessary safety equipment as well.

“ During hours of darkness, all runners are required to wear the proper protective and reflective gear,” Hroblak said. “Bright colors and reflective devices must be utilized in order to make runners more visible.”
