Fort Gordon to host Retiree Appreciation Day seminars, free check-ups

Registration for the Fort Gordon Retiree Appreciation Day scheduled Oct. 19, will kick off at 7:15 a.m. in Darling Hall, Building 33720, on Chamberlain Avenue.

The Fort Gordon Retirement Services Office staff planned and coordinated the free event with assistance from local businesses and organizations over a period of several months, according to Angela Gaston, of the Retirement Services Office.

“This event not only provides valuable information and services for retirees, but gives them an opportunity to renew acquaintances with their fellow comrades,” Gaston said. “We expect more than 500 retirees to attend this year’s event.”

The program is open to retired service members and their families, survivors of military retirees, and active duty members preparing to retire.

After a brief opening ceremony at 8 a.m., in which Augusta Mayor Deke Copenhaver is expected to read a proclamation making Oct. 19 “Retiree Appreciation Day”, the medical staff of Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center and the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center will provide oral screenings, blood pressure checks, cataract screenings, electrocardiograms, and flu shots.

Free seminars covering healthy nutrition, survivor benefit plan, VA benefits, casualty assistance process, and the 10 signs of early detection of Alzheimer’s disease, as well as heart health facts and information about services offered at the installation Army Wellness Center will be presented.

Attendees can visit an assortment of health education booths and exhibits from 8:30 a.m. to noon. A luncheon is scheduled at 12:30 p.m. at the Gordon Club. The main luncheon menu selection is baked chicken and burgundy beef tips. Col. Samuel Anderson, the Garrison commander, and Col. John Lamoureux, DDEAMC commander, will give updated information briefings regarding Fort Gordon and the hospital.

Advance reservations are required for the luncheon and must be made today. Seating is limited and the cost is $16 which will be accepted at the door.
