Winners of NCO, Service Member of the Year announced

NCO of the Year, Sgt. 1st Class James Mackay. NCO of the Year, Sgt. 1st Class James Mackay. Winners of the Fort Gordon Noncommissioned Officer of the Year and Service Member of the Year for fiscal year 2013 were announced after a board was held Sept. 23 at Signal Towers.

The NCO of the Year is Sgt. 1st Class James Mackay, a native of Tampa, Fla., assigned to Headquarters and A Company, 551st Signal Battalion, 15th Regimental Signal Brigade, and the Service Member of the Year is Sgt. Justin Tyndall, a native of Autryville, N.C., assigned to 7th Cyber Mission Unit, 7th Signal Command.

Soldiers appeared in front of a board made up of five sergeants major from the battalion and brigade level, to include the post command sergeant major.

“I had good leadership and my unit prepared me for this,” said Tyndall. “It’s just kind of intimidating being in front of senior command folks from around post.”

Those who appeared in front of the board were asking general military knowledge, regulations, and topics on how the Army is changing into the future.

Justin Tyndall. “When a Soldier comes up to you about their pay, promotion, education; Soldiers deserve a leader who knows the answer and can communicate with confidence,” said Mackay. “I knew this board was going to be difficult going in to it. They expect a lot from you, and you either know it or you don’t, because they expect you to be the absolute best.
