Fort Gordon’s quarterly Parent and Youth Advisory Council meeting was held Sept. 27 in the Gordon Club.

The meeting – conducted by the installation Child, Youth, and School Services – is an opportunity for representatives and staff from each school system to discuss topics of interest for military families with school age children. The purpose is to give parents an opportunity to learn more about CYSS program while having an opportunity to have input on future programming.

“You are our partners in helping us to ensure we are hearing the voices of our schools and our community,” said Vanessa Stanley, CYSS acting chief.

In addition to school officials and parents, students are also invited to attend. During this meeting, two students from Greenbrier High School in Evans gave a presentation on the efforts their school makes to ease children of military families in transitioning into the school.

Also discussed during the meeting were the school transition response team and PYAC local actions plans.

“Questions, concerns, ideas, and suggestions raised by the STRT lead are used to formulate local action plans,” said Melissa Barrickman, school liaison officer. “They are what we use to address issues local to the area. It’s our way of answering how we can meet the needs of military students coming into the Central Savannah River Area.”

Some ideas for meeting those needs are already in effect at area schools. Madison Metcalf and Avery Williams, the two Greenbrier students attending the meeting, discussed ways they were helping their school reach out to new students. Those methods include monthly “getting to know you meetings,” a student rally, and welcome packs provided to new students.

The meeting concluded with attendees being broken into groups to brainstorm and devise new action plans.
